A song by Terry Allen, interpreted by J. Boor:
More folks should listen to Terry Allen. He’s great. Lubbock: on Everything, whence this song, is my favorite of his records. His songwriting and performance are both sui generis. This is a Latin phrase which, I suspect, Allen would understand, but then interpret as “soo-ee generous,” applicable to a farmer who doesn’t mind calling his pigs for a long time.
Juarez (my second favorite Terry Allen album) is something like a musical Richard Brautigan story (howbeit comparisons are odious).
Allen is also a professional visual artist.
I think the only song of his that’s known outside of his cult is “Amarillo Highway”. Robert Earl Keen covered it at some point and probably still plays it live, if Robert Earl Keen is still alive. Is Robert Earl Keen still alive? Somehow I’m not sure I’d have gotten the irony of the song had I heard the REK version first. Keen can do self-parody, but Allen never cuts it out. “I Just Left Myself Today” is my favorite country music parody.
Here’s what Terry Allen looked like when he was a hip young person:
